Information management in my organization is highly utilized even before the dominant presence of COVID-19 that drastically propelled public and private organizations worldwide to resort to online methodologies. As a researcher, information, data, and medium (information systems) are essential tools throughout the researching process. One factor without the other cannot validate procured information or yield calculated surmises in a research field; therefore, the use of technologies is paramount for data security, quality, and accuracy. An example of information management in my organization is having a primary medium to hold all researchers’ data, having secondary databases, and personal backup drives; thus, there are three levels of information mediums that ensure researchers’ data are intact despite internal or external harmful factors that may compromise one medium source. Thus, information systems are a critical component ranging from desktops, online databases, GPS systems, and even smartphones that immensely influences desired work outcomes (Schneider & Valacich, 2018).

Generally, information management and information systems are costly, especially in the government that projects to spend millions in the upcoming fiscal years to ensure state of the art information technology tools, mediums, systems, and processes (White, 2007). Undoubtedly, this forecast in spending affects my organization because it heavily relies on federal funding for operations. Technology, information, and budget stakeholders in my organization are my boss and I, where we critically manage information and technology utilization compared to its performance outcomes. The information is researchers’ data, reports, and findings filter and saved through a series of data systems (online databases, desktops, external hard drives), which every researcher has control over; however, the final product is reviewed personally through my boss. Additionally, my boss and I are the control factor in information and technology management, procurement, and usefulness in the organization. If researchers require new information systems such as GPS trackers, access to restricted online databases, or any other related medium, they have to consult and request from both my boss and I, especially dealing with tighter restricted funds. This process allows the organization to effectively utilize information management to decrease the chances of information systems failures, go beyond budget, and optimize the usage of existing information systems (Schneider & Valacich, 2018).


The organization I work for is information-centric oriented, continuously focusing on advancing its internet infrastructure concurrently with innovative technology. As the upcoming digital revolution is emerging a new world with an endless data stream, rise of artificial intelligence, and new technologies that propel government beyond its existing limits, organizations must keep up by upgrading their policy, physical, and legislative developments (Arvind Satyam, 2019). Within my work context, researchers are producing quality results in quicker rates due to new technologies, policies, and training that comes with it. In short, information technology profoundly impacts researchers’ effectiveness and efficiency; thus, increasing the organization’s overall performance. By eliminating issues and obstacles during the research process, it symbolizes a greater meaning that government organizations that invest in their information technology structure can solve present and future problems, while significantly reducing costs (Orton-Jones, 2017).

Enhancing Information Management and Information Technology at Work

Currently, my organization is undergoing information or digital advancement into online financial databases. As the COVID-19 pandemic drastically propelled this digital movement, government organizations such as mine expect exponential growth in the digital world that provides global and intergovernmental connections (Magana, 2017). By increasing informational technology, specifically on financial databases, researchers and other employees can procure equipment, supplies, payroll, and other necessities within their fields significantly quicker than ever before. Although there are local and federal policies in place for government funding, explicitly taxpayer’s money, these new information technology systems are adjusted to follow tailored legislation, policies, and guidelines as opposed to the private sector. Despite these adjustments that can prolong the process of these new databases, they offer less federal and local spending in the long run. Expanding this digital infrastructure may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in government expenditures, but produces immense flexibility, telework capabilities, rapid processes, and minimizes issues.

Additionally, my organization can significantly benefit from a business model integration with its current organizational structure. Despite working in a government organization, it mainly procures funding through federal grants through competitive competition with other researchers and must persuade federal stakeholders to increase budgets. Unlike the private sector and its businesses, they heavily invest in information technology to gain an edge amongst its competitors (White, 2007). Utilizing a business model, my organization must provide substantial evidence on why they should receive higher funding, which is achievable through increasing information systems, technology, and innovative models. This process requires financial investment for a couple of fiscal years; however, it can reduce researchers from international travel, state the art research methodologies (including equipment), access to extensive studies, and analyze data and statistics. Practically, with proper information system tools and management, government organizations can integrate business model aspects, techniques, or components to increase revenue, reduce costs, and produce higher quality outcomes (White, 2007).
