Exercise 1.2 Rhetorical Summaries
Due date: September 7th
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to develop your critical reading and understanding of academic writing.
Task: For this exercise, write rhetorical summaries for the assigned essays by Jones, Pangilinan, and Guevara from WAVES using the template below. A more detailed template is available here.
Sentence One (What?)
(Author Full Name) in the essay, (Title), argues that (Argument/Thesis).
Sentence Two (How?)
(Author Last Name) supports his/her/their claim by (Evidence).
Sentence Three (Why?)
The author’s purpose is to prove (Argument/Thesis) in order to (Purpose).
Sentence Four (Who?)
(Author Last Name) writes in a (Tone) for (Audience).
Criteria for Success: Your assignment should meet the following minimum requirements:
Clear, specific, and written in full sentences.
Summary for each of the readings following the template.
Upload to Canvas by the due date as a Word doc or pdf file.
Rhetorical Summary (Précis)
In your FOUR SENTENCE rhetorical summary, you will:
➢ Write in present tense.
➢ Include the main points. What important information is the article providing about the topic? DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR OPINION. Remember, the article may introduce various counterpoints – so include them all.
➢ Provide specific details and facts (including the names of the authorities and places mentioned in the article). You do not need to list every quote or every person, but you should mention the most important ones as they relate to what you are saying about the article.
➢ Identify the author’s purpose for the text and the intended audience.
➢ Use the template below; Follow it carefully.
