Note: Part I and II should be typed into a single Word document . As with all assignment submissions APA format should be followed. (though make sure that your writing is well-written and grammatically correct). Part I: The 9/11 Effect(Kent Roach) Introduction and Chapter 1 Questions After reading the Introduction and Chapter 1 answer the following questions: United National Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1373 emphasized three (3) counter-terrorism areas: terrorism financing, the use of immigration law as antiterrorism law, and the sharing of intelligence. After describing these areas of emphasis discuss why each is controversial and make a recommendation on how these controversies could be addressed or corrected. Resolution 1373 also created the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC). Describe the role of the CTC and give an example of why it is controversial. As with the first question, make a recommendation on how to change the CTC. Part II: The 9/11 Effect Update(Kent Roach) Since the publication of the Roach text The 9/11 Effect (2011) a number of UNSC resolutions have passed addressing counter-terrorism, especially relating to the rise of the Islamic State and the Syrian Civil War. Attached are three resolutions passed since the publication of the text: 2170 (2014), 2354 (2017), and 2396 (2017). I’ve also attached 1373 (2001) for comparative purposes. Answer the following questions: Summarize the content of each resolution. Identify any possible controversies found in each resolution. In light of Roach’s critique of 1373, how are the three resolutions different? Note: UNSC resolutions can be very frustrating to read. I understand that if you are reading UN resolutions for the first time they can seem very foreign and repetitive with vague and sterile verbiage. When reading the attached resolutions (and rereading them) attempt to focus on the content and meaning. When assessing Part II of this assignment I will keep in mind that this is not a class dedicated to international relations or the inner workings of the United Nations
