Answer only one of the following questions, using evidence to support an argument: Question 1: Did women in Japan have power in ancient and/or classical period? Why or why not? How did that power manifest in their hands (or, alternately in the hands of others)? Explain your response. OR Question 2 Japan had an elite military class that did not exist in China. How do we explain the rise of this independent military class? What was their relationship to the nobility and leadership in the Classical Capitals? Why are the Chinese political models not kept in Japan? Explain your response. Answers must explore social, political, economic, or cultural features (pick one or two aspects on which to focus). The answer must be discussed concretely, using specific evidence to support your argument. Evidence can be from primary sources we used your textbook, or lecture materials and reference at least two of the readings you were assigned.
