To answer this question, you must engage deeply and comparatively with at least two of the following readings from our “Religion and Empire” unit, or two readings plus the film. Use the readings as evidence to support a clear overall thesis that answers the prompt. The paper should be 3-4 double-spaced pages. Times New Roman 12 pt font with 1-inch margins. You must use in-text citations (Author’s last name, page) but a bibliography is not necessary. Texts that you may use: -“Caananites in a Promised Land” by Alfred Cave -“Religion, Empire, and Torture” by Bruce Lincoln – “Imperial Encounters” by Peter Van Der Veer -“The World Before Her” (Film) -“Do Muslim Women Need Saving?” by Lila Abu-Lughod – “The Gendered Imagery and Women’s Leadership of Hindu Nationalism” by Amrita Basu Some writing tips to keep in mind: -A clear and specific thesis must be articulated at the end of a short introduction. When writing the thesis, ask yourself: How exactly will you link together religion and colonialism or religion and nationalism? What aspect or aspects will you focus on? Find a specific angle or intervention. This intervention will depend on which two texts you choose to engage in comparatively. -Outline before you write! Organize your paper so that all of your paragraphs and examples from the readings clearly support and build on your thesis. -The purpose of this essay is to push you to do a close reading and analysis of at least two different case studies. I want to see that you are able to take two different case studies, from different cultural and historical contexts, and “put them in conversation.” -Use in-text citations whenever you are summarizing or directly quoting a text from the syllabus. Avoid long direct quotes that take up space in a short essay (limit to one sentence or better yet just pull out a short phrase). It is always better to summarize the author’s arguments in your own words to demonstrate your clear understanding of the text. But make sure you still include in-text citations when summarizing. -As always, make sure you follow the formatting guidelines above. You MUST write at least 3 complete pages for full credit.
