Advanced Persistent Threat

The textbook provides some basics about specific techniques used by hackers to perform reconnaissance and basic system exploit techniques. Earlier in course, the concept of the “Advanced Persistent Threat” or APT was introduced. I like to break this concept down as follows: – Advanced: Highly skilled people with advanced technical resources such as custom-developed tools and undiscovered (zero-day) vulnerabilities. – Persistent: Highly motivated toward a specific goal and in possession of the resources (time, money, people) necessary to achieve that goal. – Threat: Seeking to gain unauthorized access to systems and/or data to accomplish their goal. APT’s are the best of the best (or perhaps more appropriately the best of the worst). They could be working on behalf of organized crime, intelligence agencies, or unscrupulous business interests. A few years ago, Lockheed Martin developed a model they refer to as the “Cyber Kill Chain” to described the stages of these targeted attacks. Some attacks involve careful planning and preparation that can take years to execute. Attached are a number of resources discussing the Cyber Kill Chain. Using these and other resources you may find on the web, prepare a PowerPoint presentation describing the Cyber Kill Chain. Include a slide defining the Cyber Kill Chain. For each stage, address the following: – What are the objectives of the stage (i.e., what new information or capabilities does this stage provide for the attacker)? – What techniques and tools are used (provide specific examples)? – What risks are inherent with the stage that a business should be concerned with? – What can be done to address (i.e., identify/detect, defend against) attacks at this stage? The PowerPoint should have at least 9 slides and include a slide with references.
