Post traumatic stress disorder

Research question: does post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) only affect combat veterans? Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition that affects the lives of millions of people continually and it results from traumatic events (Lancaster, 2016). These traumatic events can include domestic abuse, sexual and/or physical assault, car accidents, and war (Lancaster, 2016). In most cases, people go through PTSD for months and even years. Furthermore, these symptoms vary because some people experience PTSD a year after the traumatic event, or within a month. If someone is exposed to a serious traumatic event there’s a likely chance that they will experience flashbacks, and avoidance; plus, mood and attitude changes, self-destructiveness, and aggression (Lancaster, 2016). Personally, I choose this topic because reflecting back to where I came from, there is a great number of people who experience post-traumatic stress disorder as the result of the war. Due to that, it is important we educate people on this topic. Ultimately, this question may address a gap in knowledge because there’s an assumption that only soldiers who have been through war experience post-traumatic stress disorder (Ryback, 2016). Ryback, R. (2016). 5 Myths About PTSD. Psychology Today. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-truisms-wellness/201610/5-myths-about-ptsd feedback from students I’m glad you chose this topic as I believe there are many misconceptions about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among the general population. You raise a good point in mentioning that PTSD may result from a variety of events and I’m sure you’ll have no issue substantiating this claim. My suggestion is that you may want to specialize your question even further, perhaps examining the differences in how PTSD manifests based on each traumatic event–or perhaps you could examine how PTSD can affect an individual’s quality of life. I will attach one article I found which links PTSD to accelerated aging. Based on this, I think you have a lot of options when examining the effects of PTSD and I’m sure you’ll conduct some very interesting research. Interesting topic, I like that you are researching PTSD as I believe it is not often discussed and can sometimes be misunderstood. I definitely agree with you that many times PTSD is associated with soldiers who have been through war, this is why I suggest you dive into detail about other major experiences (like the ones you mentioned) and compare how each one may individually affect a person’s life. I briefly looked up experiences that can cause PTSD and found that PTSD can occur due to direct or indirect experiences, it may be interesting to see how experiences under those situations differ as well. Learning about both direct and indirect experiences may help more people realize and understand the range of events and how they affect people’s wellbeing. Great topic choice, PTSD, and mental illness in general is often misunderstood! Based on what you were stating about your interest in the subject I would say it might be a good idea to look into the stigma and confusion surrounding PTSD diagnosis. Due to the fact PTSD is so often associated with only soldiers, are there people going un-diagnosed? With PTSD being linked to traumatic and personal events are victims reluctant to come forward? please help me write good research that will make come back to your website.
