Your paper must have at least 3 credible scientific sources. Here is one example:
Pieper, K. J., Martin, R., Tang, M., Walters, L., Parks, J., Roy, S., Devine, C., & Edwards, M. A. (2018). Evaluating Water Lead Levels During the Flint Water Crisis. Environmental Science & Technology, 52(15), 8124–8132. https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.8b00791 (Links to an external site.)
All sources must be cited in the same way as this example, as follows:
Author 1 last name, Author 1 initials, Author 2 last name, Author 2 initials, etc (year). Title. Journal name, volume # (issue #), page numbers. URL.
The paper will be about 4 to 5 pages single spaced, font calibri light, size 12, not including figures or the page of citations (reference list).
You should have at least one figure, and refer to the figure by number in the paper. The figure should have a short caption.
Use short headings for sections of the paper, starting with the Introduction and ending with Conclusions (or Summary). These are called A-level headings. You do not need B-level headings for such a relatively short paper.
Your paper will be assessed on the depth and quality of research effort/use of souces (30%), clarity and thoroughness of content (40%), overall organization (10%) as well as paragraph organization and development (10%), and grammar/typos/editing (10%).
The professor will discuss an example of a recent (Spring, 2020) student paper that meets these standards. That paper is attached herePreview the document, with name removed for privacy.
The student developed an excellent outline, and we met on zoom frequently to discuss her paper. She shared these comments about how she developed the paper:
“My best advice I have for building an outline is writing down the questions you want to answer, and the topics you need to cover first. Then you put those in an order that logically builds on itself, making a kind of story. To me, research papers need to tell a story that makes sense when you read it start to finish, and the story is supported by facts. When finding sources I really let them build on each other. There were a few key documents and files from the court case in Flint that held almost all the key information about the incident, and cited work by two important scientists in the discovery of the issue.”
