When I think about the term resiliency, I recall from my readings that it includes two facets, risk and protection. The image that comes to my mind is the idea of bouncing back. If I’m on a trampoline, the trampoline would serve as a protective factor because it would push me up to a standing position when I fell. However, it would be difficult to bounce back if I fell on concrete. The concrete would be an example of a risk. The pandemic has proven to be a form of “concrete” for many, greatly reducing their ability to bounce back due to health, economic, employment and mental health issues caused or made worse by coronavirus.

The term intersectionality makes me consider what it means to be Black and a woman when it comes to social justice movements. The book title – “All the Women are White, All the Blacks are Men but Some of Us are Brave” powerfully captures the way Black women are often marginalized in the fight for human rights for both African Americans and women. I think of the way Tarana Burke was almost erased from the narrative of the Me Too movement; and how many Black women victims of police brutality fail to receive the same attention and outrage that is seemingly reserved for their Black male counterparts.

Systems theory helps me to appreciate how “no person is an island” and we each, as individuals, belong to systems that are interdependent and interconnected. So, when the federal response to the pandemic is “too little, too late”, and some refuse to wear masks, and Covid cases increase, and schools shut down and children must learn virtually from home….we clearly see how those inputs can make it difficult for a family or community to maintain equilibrium.
