For purposes of the research aspect of this assignment, we will be using the following definitions:
Culture: Someone’s way of life. Their beliefs, language, traditions, etc.
Ethnicity/”Race”: What ethnic group or “race” do they identify with? Some people choose not to identify with an ethnicity/”race” and that is OK.
Family Structure: The type of family the person was raised in or has now (single parent, two-parent, a same-sex couple, grandparents raising children, single with no children, married with no children, divorced family, military family, siblings raising siblings, etc)
There are links for specific data reports that you can use to get demographics for the above information. You are free to find your own demographic data and you must cite these sources in your report. Here are two that I found for you that offers some information on the above categories we are using in this report:
Family Structure: Living Arrangements for Children
(Links to an external site.)
: You can select which data you want to see from “All Indicators in This Topic” on the left menu. A new page will open and then you can “Clear All” and then select San Bernardino County from the left menu. This is helpful if you are looking for data on the “single parent” family structure.
US Census Bureau Quick Facts:
(Links to an external site.)
You can go to this page to see data for other indicators such as “Race,” Education, Gender, Age… be sure to choose San Bernardino County because that is where your classmates live. If the person you interview resides in a different county, then you need to look up demographic data for the county they live in.
The research portion MUST include the following:
Census information about the culture/ethnicity or family type for their community (San Bernardino County). Go to: US Census Bureau Quick Facts: San Bernardino County
(Links to an external site.)
Current issues facing this demographic (if any). You can do a Google search for this topic.
Stereotypes often associated with this culture/ethnicity or family type (a Google search would work here as well).
The final written report MUST include the following:
Organized responses to AT LEAST 25 of the interview questions IN ESSAY FORMAT using full and complete sentences, using paragraphs (no numbering, headers, or bullets)
Summary of the differences and similarities that exist between the student and classmate
Summary of what student has learned from doing this assignment
Students must use credible sources (do not use Wikipedia), cite all sources, and use grammar, spelling, and punctuation properly adhering to APA formatting guidelines.
These questions go into the Mini Research
What is your definition of “culture?”
My definition of culture is how you were raised and what you experienced growing up. Some of it does come from where you were born or where your family came from as well.
What does love mean to you and your family?
Love means to care for somebody, show them that you care about them.
How did you learn about love?
I learned it from growing up with my parents. Even though they were divorced, all four of my parents loved me and showed me compassion.
What goals or dreams did you have as a child? Tell me about the goals you completed.
When I was a child I wanted to be a vet and a mother. Needless to say, I am not a vet but I do have a lot of animals that I am learning how to take care of. I am a mother of two kids.
What are your thoughts/beliefs about education? How important is an education in your family?
This one is hard because for my little family (my kids and myself) I think education is important. If I did not go to school, I am not sure what kind of job I would be able to get. As for the big family, education is not as important. My mom just graduated from college but most of my family did not even graduate high school.
How do you define “family?”
I have multiple definitions of family. The first one is the one you are born into, they may be crazy but they are your blood and you are stuck with them. The other definition of family is the one you choose. I have a couple of sisters that are not blood to me. We became more than best friends and we call each other sisters now.
Who holds the most “status” in your family? Why?
For my little family, I hold the status. I am the only adult in the house. With my big family, it was my grandpa until he passed away. Since he has passed away my grandma as a little status but not as much as he had.
How do you define success?
Success has different things. As an adult, it is being able to live on your own, pay your own bills, and have a reasonable life. It doesn’t mean you have the fanciest things or go on elaborate vacations.
Do you consider your parents to be successful? Please explain.
I consider both of my parents very successful. My dad and stepmom have high-end stuff whereas my mom and stepdad do not. But I consider my mom and stepdad successful too.
Is punctuality important to you? Why or why not?
Punctuality is one of my biggest pet peeves. I do not like being late and do not like it when other people are late. People set times for a reason, they want to meet up with you at that time, not around that time. I get anxious if I am running late so I am normally very early for things.
Do you eat foods that are indigenous to your culture? Why or why not? If you answered yes, name some of the foods that you eat. If you answered no, what types of foods do you eat?
I do not eat very many foods that are indigenous to my family. There are a couple of things that I will eat if we are at a family event or I am in the mood for it. One thing is this cucumber side dish. The seasoning is all in german so I am not sure exactly what it is called. Another thing that we make is rouladen. It is meat wrapped around a pickle and we put it in the slow cooker. If we are traveling and we find a german deli, we always try to visit it as well.
Did you ever live with your grandparents or extended family?
Growing up my mom and stepdad would get into fights, we stayed at my grandparent’s house for a little while and also lived in big bear at my grandparent’s cabin. As for myself, right before I had my daughter my husband at the time and I moved in with his parent. We lived there for a year just so we could get our feet back under us.
How important is a religion in your family? Why?
For my little family religion is a big part of our everyday life. We go to church, I work at the church during the week doing daycare and my kids go with me.
If religion is important in your family, do you plan to pass this on to your children? Why or why not?
I hope that because my kids are going with me that they will continue going to church as they grow up. My daughter is very involved in the church and I am hoping my son finds his place as well.
Do you have any eating habits/rituals that are specific to your culture?
Define and describe the most important (or most celebrated) holiday of your culture.
I am not sure what the most important holiday is for my culture but for my family they are Christmas and Easter.
If you are from a culture that speaks English as a second language, do you speak your native language? If not, why? If so, will you teach your native language to any children you have?
I was raised speaking English as well as my mom. My mom did take a german class in college but we are not fluent or even speak it.
How is physical contact viewed in your culture?
We are a very touchy-feely family. We love to give hugs and will touch your arms.
What is considered most disrespectful in your culture?
I honestly am not sure what would be most disrespectful. The only thing I can think of is a lack of respect, especially to the elder.
What is considered most respectful in your culture?
Being respectful to others
Have you ever experienced racism? In what form?
I have not experienced any racism. I am a very accepting person and everybody I hang out with is the same way.
What can be done about racism and prejudice, in your opinion?
we need to teach our children that skin of color does not mean anything except for a different color. we need to teach them that they can be friends with whoever they want. Also that any race can be a bad person or a good person. it is about what is inside not what is on the skin.
Do young people today have a sense of culture?
I think the sense of culture is drifting off as the family gets further and further down the generation line. When the family first migrated to the united states, the sense of culture was high but many families are many years from that point.
What is the best thing about living in the USA?
There are good and bad points of living in the united states but one is the freedom we have. Woman in other places are not viewed as an individual and do not have as many rights.
Is there anything you would like others to know that we have not included here about you or your culture…..
Not that I can think of.
