This assignment should be submitted to the proper TurnItIn Drop Box by 12:00 NOON on the due date listed here. The submission will be graded according to the rubric appearing in the syllabus, and should be thoroughly proofread and properly cited. Limit your response to no more than 1,800 words (not including citations). Remember that all assignments can be turned in early for evaluation, and you will receive feedback within 72 hours.
This assignment is a revision of the previous assignment, drawing from the information covered in class. For this assignment, you will again need to refer back to the Ethical Intuitions Survey from the first quiz of the term, and again select of the items 8-15 to be your topic. You may choose the same item you chose for the previous assignment, making the necessary additions/changes described below, or a different one, in which case you will be writing an entirely new essay.
The assignment is to write an essay structured in precisely the same way as the previous essay, including the same four sections and meeting all the same criteria, so re-read the instructions for the First Homework Assignment and follow them.
However, this essay must also make use of at least two objectivist ethical theories or principles that you have acquired from the assigned readings in this course. There are two possible sources of these. The first are the assigned readings from the reading schedule in your syllabus, on the objectivist ethical theories of Utilitarianism, Kantian Deontology, Deontological Pluralism, Virtue Ethics, and Care Ethics. Any of these theories would be appropriate to use here. Second, if you consult the table of contents of your textbook, you will find that there are at least two readings contained therein on whichever of the possible topics you have chosen.
When presenting the several arguments the assignment requires (Affirmation/Argument, Refutation/Counterargument, and Resolution/Conclusion), you must at some point in one or more of those sections, describe and make use of the ethical theories or principles of authors whose works you have read. You might find that you can use two different authors to support the same part of your essay (i.e., find two theories that both support the same position regarding the topic), or that you can use one theory/principle to support one position, and another theory/principle to counterargue against that position, but in any case, at least two different theories/principles from authors other than yourself must be applied correctly to the issue that is your central topic.
The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that not only can you successfully argue for and against your own theses (as you did in the previous essay), but that you can can also understand and properly apply others’ theories & principles to argue for or against your own theses.
It should go without saying that this essay MUST have a properly formatted works cited/references page and in-text citations. It might have been possible to write the previous assignment without any citations, but given the instructions are explicitly requiring you to make use of AT LEAST TWO OTHER AUTHORS’ IDEAS in this essay, you absolutely must provide citations when doing so. If your works cited page doesn’t contain AT LEAST TWO entries, you’ve done something wrong.
