Argument is a Rhetorical Mode that is used to persuade. It develops a line of reasoning and presents facts and evidence to support a claim and persuade the reader to accept it. Like Exposition, an Argument essay presents information to the reader, but while Exposition reports and analyses facts with the purpose of helping the reader to understand the subject, Argument presents a specific stance or position on a subject and provides information to support that position and convince the reader that it is correct. For this reason, Argument always takes a side on a subject; its purpose is to motivate and persuade the reader to believe, change, or act. An effective and persuasive Argument is developed through a series of steps: 1. Prepare the argument  clearly identify the purpose and the audience  consider and assess a broad range of information to generate ideas, collect evidence, and understand the different perspectives on the issue  develop a line of reasoning to link points in a clear and logical progression of ideas 2. Make the claim  draw logical conclusions from the evidence  state the claim as a debatable point which will be the focus of the argument (the Thesis)  use qualifiers to ensure that the claim is balanced & reasonable 3. Support the claim  provide solid evidence to support each point of the claim  test the line of reasoning for errors and fallacies Argument 4. Engage the opposition  make concessions by noting good points made by the opposing side of the argument  point out the weaknesses of the opposing argument  emphasise the logical strengths of the central claim of the argument There are 4 important elements of an Argument essay: Claims Evidence Warrants Appeals The argument is developed through a series of Claims that advance the line of reasoning and support the Thesis. Each claim should be supported by effective Evidence. In order to create an effective argument, the Warrants, or implied assumptions that relate the evidence to the claim, must be logical and direct. And the Appeals that are employed to create a connection with the reader should establish the writer’s credibility and evoke the reader’s trust
