First, review these scholarly articles:
Stuart Hall’s “Cultural Identity and Diaspora”: http://sites.middlebury.edu/nydiasporaworkshop/files/2011/04/D-OA-HallStuart-CulturalIdentityandDiaspora.pdf
Bhugra et al. “Migration, Cultural Bereavement and Cultural Identity”: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1414713/
Wah, “Engaging the Haitian Diaspora”: https://www.thecairoreview.com/essays/engaging-the-haitian-diaspora/
Next, select one of the articles from above to read closely. Then, consider these questions for the article you’ve selected (you are not submitting a written list of answers, but eventually responding to them in essay form):
What is the central topic or of your selected article?
What is the thesis (main idea/issue/theme) of your selected article? What is the writer(s) arguing?
What elements of the selected article contribute to your understanding of the thesis?
What evidence is used by the article to support its thesis?
How does the information in the article relate to or impact a community (however you define it) with which you are familiar?
Finally, is the article convincing? Why or why not? (The answer to this question will function as your own thesis statement for your essay.)
Next, craft an essay (four-paragraph minimum) that summarizes the purpose, central claim and key evidence of your chosen article, as well as analyzes the author’s biases and assumptions; the effectiveness of the evidence, organization and conclusions; and, the intended audience of the article you’ve chosen.
Note: Your own thesis should be in response to question #6: Is the article’s thesis convincing and why or why not? Place your thesis statement in or just after your introduction/summary of the article.
The essay should include a minimum of two direct quotations from the article you’ve chosen.
Include parenthetical citations for each quotation, even if you introduce the quote with the author’s name.
Provide a Works Cited entry for the article at the end of your post. However, it must be formatted in MLA style. Use this site as a reference on how to do it: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html
Remember, in MLA style, the title of “big” texts (i.e., book, magazine, website, feature length movies, albums, etc.) are to be placed in italics, while the titles of “small” texts (i.e., articles, web pages, short films/videos, songs, etc.) are to be placed in quotation marks.
