With the spread of Covid 19, things like mask wearing, social distancing and working from home have become normalized. However this “new normal” has also posed new challenges for people across the globe and it has exacerbated inequality for minority groups which include groups like racial/ethnic minorities, people living with disabilities, immigrants, the elderly and the LGBTQ2S+ communities. For the purposes of this infographic, we are narrowing in on the women and self-identified women within the LGBTQ2S+ community and the effects of Covid 19 that they face.
To begin, it is important to note that the LGBTQ2S+ community is faced with the constant minority stress brought about by ant- LGBTQ2S+ sentiments. Unrelated to Covid 19, this anti-LGBTQ2S+ sentiment poses social stress and structural barriers for these people.
The spread of Covid 19 presented new challenges to the LGBTQ2S+ community which include loss of income, changes in living conditions, reduced access to legal protections, and fear of seeking out medical help when symptoms of Covid 19 are experienced.
The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is a safe, non-judgemental place for women of various social backgrounds. With this mission statement at the heart of all its services, the organization offers support groups, counseling, advocacy and educational programs to nurture and empower members. The infographic we provide could be used by the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre as educational content to be shared on their social media platforms. It can be used to spread awareness of the challenges that Covid 19 has exacerbated for the women and self-identified women within the LGBTQ2S+ community.
