Focusing on the period and styles covered by this unit, identify a particular visual work of art that inspires you, not just visually but intellectually. You may choose an artist and work discussed in your readings and video, but you are not limited to these options. Briefly research the background of the artist (the artist’s social and cultural life, the artist’s influences, etc., if applicable) and the work itself. Your post should be as original as possible.
How does the piece you chose express the features of its style movement or period? Be sure to include your thoughts on what you feel was a primary influence for the artist in developing the piece.

Try to describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate the chosen artwork to the best of your abilities, using knowledge you have acquired throughout this week, and using WRITING AN ART CRITIQUE and VISUAL ANALYSIS GUIDELINES documents provided under Module 2. Ensure that your choice was created in the time frames identified here.

Respond to classmates’ posts that have focused on different works of art than the one you chose. Compare your chosen work with theirs. You have to respond to at least two of your peers for a full credit. All your posts should be as substantive and substantial as possible.

For a full credit: Initial post (at least 200 words in length) has to be submitted by Thursday evening, or no later than on Friday evening. You have to respond to at least two of your peers and me (if you have been asked a question) with substantive and substantial posts (100-200 words) by Sunday evening.
Include images and used sources.

The artwork that I am going to the discussion is called the oath of the horatii in 1784, by J.L. David. It was 329.8cm x424.8cm, which was quite big. David became famous because of this artwork and it was known as one of the best paintings in the Neoclassical style. It looks like the figures in the paintings are in a courtyard. From the right, there are three women and a child. These women look tired and the woman in the blue cap is holding the child. From the left, there are three men reaching for three swords, that are holding by an old man in the red cap. The old man is in the middle of the painting. The features of Neoclassicism are the straight lines and simple use of color, which are all represented in this piece (lumen). The three most obvious straight lines are the arches, the armed man’s arm, and the swords. The two arches lines clearly divide the three groups of people. If the arms and swords lines extend throughout the artwork, we can see that the lines divide the figures into different parts. There are not many colors in this painting. The first armed man’s clothes correspond with the color of the old man’s clothes. The other armed man’s clothes colors seem to correspond with the color of the woman’s clothes. The use of background colors are just simple white and gray, with black shadows.

Second:
Oath of the Horatii is an oil painting on canvas created by French painter Jack Louis Davit in 1784 and is now in the collection of the Louvre in Paris. The painter used the technique of revealing the theme from multiple sides, making the tragic and dramatic scenes extremely rich. The fortitude and tragic of men contrast with the crying of women, deepening the ideological nature of the subject. The atmosphere on the screen is clear: for the survival of the nation and to save the motherland, the only way to sacrifice family and personal interests. The expressions and movements of the main characters in the painting are passionate, and the classical architecture in the background highlights this solemn atmosphere. When the French people sang the revolutionary song “Either victory or death” and rushed to the front to fight a decisive battle with foreign invaders and aristocratic exiles, the drum action of this painting was very obvious.
The theme of the painting is taken from the legend of ancient Rome: the ancient Romans fought for a long time with the neighboring Guritians, and both sides were exhausted. Later, the elders agreed to a final battle, but unfortunately the people of both sides had a marriage relationship. And Horace was a family in ancient Rome at that time. The composition in the picture is rigorous and the technique is superb. The author takes the scene where the third brother Horace stretches out his right hand and swears solemnly to the sword when he accepts the weapon granted by his father. In order to better render the atmosphere, even the classical architecture in the background highlights this solemn vibe. The cry of the women is in sharp contrast with the passionate spirit of the three warriors above, which strengthens the ideological nature of the subject. The tragic atmosphere is obvious. For the survival of the motherland and the nation, only family and personal interests can be sacrificed. The author uses his pen to inspire people to fight for republic and freedom.
