Comic Script Analysis
Select three or more individual comic strips (whether weekday or Sunday strips, but you must include a minimum of three separate strips) from the Calvin and Hobbes book for analysis. You may choose any strips in the book, provided they have not already been discussed in class. Your paper should clearly identify which strips you have chosen to analyze, indicating the page number, as well as their location on the page (top, middle, or bottom).
You are to analyze the strips you choose, with regard to which theory or theories from class you believe could best be applied to the situations and/or dialogue portrayed. Depending on the strips you choose, one theory may apply to all three, or you may apply separate theories to each. (You should focus on the original 5 theories of deviance, not the approaches to mental illness). The number of theories you choose to apply will vary depending on the content of the specific comics you’re analyzing, but in most cases at least 2 to 3 theories should be discussed in each paper. You should also consider how other material that has been discussed in class might be relevant. For example, specific aspects of education, childhood, adolescence, & bullying could be relevant to your analysis, depending on the strips you choose.
You will then report your analysis. Your paper should not only demonstrate your understanding of which theories or other concepts apply to the strips that you have chosen, but should also demonstrate your understanding and comprehension of those theories and concepts. Stating which theories you believe apply is not sufficient, if you are unable to clearly explain why those theories can correctly be applied to the comic strips.
