“Koran by Heart.” Film Response
First, watch the entire film, “Koran by Heart.” Then, answer the following questions:
Why and in what ways are memorizing and reciting the Qur’an important to the participants in the film? What religious, social, educational, and political issues are involved, and how are these being debated (directly and indirectly) with reference to the Qur’an?
Your answer should focus on the experiences of several different participants (Egyptian religious scholars running the competition, the teachers, the parents, the children themselves). Be sure to discuss differences as well as similarities in perspectives, and focus on lived experiences (what are people actually doing and hoping for?), not ideals (what do texts or religious authorities say that people are supposed to do/want).
