Write an analysis paper on Hamlet by Shakespeare. Each of the numbers in the instructions below should be a separate paragraph. This must be typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 pt. font, using MLA format. It will be written as an essay. Do not label each section should be labeled A-G (you must still follow the margins of MLA format). Each section will have a different length; some sections will be one paragraph, while others should be multiple paragraphs; remember to follow the standard rules of English. Your paper should be neat and organized. Remember always to stay in the present tense when writing about literature. Your analysis must include all of the following literary elements: 1. A concise, one-paragraph synopsis of the novel. Write this paragraph as a way to inform future readers about the novel. Include the genre of the novel, which is the type of book it is, such as historical-drama, romance, science fiction, etc. (Fiction is not the answer – EVERYONE was required to read a fiction book). Would you recommend this book or not? Explain. 2. Authors choose titles for their novels very carefully and specifically. Be sure to describe and explain thoroughly the significance of the title. 3. Setting is the physical environment in which action occurs. It includes time and place. Often, it is used significantly (it may be a motivating force in behavior or a reflection of characters’ states of mind, etc.). Write a thorough explanation of the importance of setting in this novel. Explain the uses the author makes of it. 4. Theme is the central idea or ideas the writer intends to share with the reader. It can be an opinion about life, human nature, or society. What is the theme of the novel you read? Write a statement of theme and describe how it is developed throughout the novel. Be certain to use supporting passages as evidence to show the development. 5. Symbolism is a device in literature where an object represents an idea. Choose at least three symbols included in the novel you read, and thoroughly explain the ideas being represented through the objects. Why did the author choose these specific objects? What do the chosen objects reveal about the ideas? Be sure to illustrate how the symbols are used. (This section should have multiple paragraphs.) 6. Resolution is the conclusion of the novel, how the author wraps everything up and brings it to a close. Readers may not always feel satisfied with the way things end. It is your job to critique the resolution. Describe what happens at the end of the novel. You are the critic; after you give a short summary of the ending, you must tell us what you did and didn’t like, and you must be specific! Was it an effective ending? Was it consistent with the rest of the book? How? Would you have ended the novel differently? Why or why not? 7. The author’s biography may be illuminating for you. Write a paragraph or two explaining how understanding the author’s life helps you understand what the author wishes you to think, feel, or do.
