Researched Argument ProposalWrite a proposal for your Researched Argument. Give any background necessary and offer a clear thesis statement (a debatable claim about why a particular short story should be taught in college today). Make sure that your thesis is centered on a clear, single idea. Suggest briefly what aspects of the literary work you plan to focus on and what types of sources you’re thinking about using. Concern over how individuals present themselves is not new, though. Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” should be taught in colleges today because it helps students think critically about the potential for deception when individuals are overly focused on appearances. I will point out that Mathilde is obsessed with how she appears to others. She believes that she needs fine clothing and jewelry to be admired, and she bases her self-worth on how others perceive her. Ironically, she admires and envies her friend because of her apparent wealth, but Mrs. Forrestier’s necklace is fake, intentionally designed to deceive others. For secondary sources, I plan to search for academic articles about “The Necklace” to see what others have said about deception or self-representation in the story. I might also look for articles on how the short story has been taught in college or some general pedagogical strategies for connecting literature to current events or modern circumstances. I will also use examples from social media to show how some people represent (or misrepresent) themselves online in order to change the way they are perceived. I would also like to find a scholarly article that discusses self-representation in the digital age
