This is a scholarly research paper on an artist you selected. For this paper you will write about the artist’s life and work and contextualize that artist for your fellow students.
5-6 pages (not including images and bibliography).
12-point font, Times New Roman
Citations using endnotes (not in-text), Chicago Style
Include relevant images at the end of your paper (listed as Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.)
Provide a bibliography after images.
All papers are expected to have proper spelling and grammar (without this your argument gets lost).
For this paper start with an introduction that includes a clearly stated thesis. In your introduction include a guide as to what your argument will be that will prove your thesis.
In the paragraphs following the introduction, provide specific research and formal analyses that support your thesis. Each body paragraph should transition smoothly into the next while building what you have written on before. Aim to have a topic sentence that clearly sets out the argument of that paragraph. The reader should be able to see this sentence and get a sense for the paper’s logical development. For your argument you will may utilize formal, iconographical, and contextual analysis to come to your conclusions.
The conclusion is very important. It can: point to the significance of your claims, offer suggestions for further research, provide further questions. After you have provided a compact summary of your argument in the conclusion, a prominent sentence should finish a version of this statement: “This argument matters because . . .”
This is a scholarly paper, which means you must find accurate/scholarly sources.
Sources may include:
Interviews with the artists
Museum collections websites
Newspaper articles about exhibitions or artist
Artist’s website for images and artist’s statement
Footnotes and your bibliography paper document the research you have quoted, paraphrased or summarized in the body of your paper as well as any ideas you have borrowed and expressed in your paragraphs.
All images and direct quotes must be cited. Use direct quotes sparingly and only if there is no way for you to write it better. All information not in common knowledge should be cited.
