The guiding statements in each question are provided to assist you with your answer. You will need additional details in order to fully answer the question. Those details should be supported by your research on the topic. Your answer should be presented in a narrative format and be thorough.

Your assignment will be run through Turnitin to ensure that the assignment is completed individually and outside information is appropriately paraphrased. With the exception of the last question, each question is worth 10pts.

 

 

1. Provide a thorough explanation of the endosymbiont theory (4 pts). In your answer provide details of how cells acquired mitochondria and chloroplasts. (0.5 pts each) What is the significance of this theory? (1 pt) Provide three examples endosymbionts that can be observed in the natural world today that support this theory. 2. In a narrative format, compare cellular respiration, photosynthesis and alcohol fermentation. (1 pt for appropriate reference use) In your comparison, be sure to include the following:

-The chemical equation for the processes (0.5 pts per process)

-Organisms capable of each process (0.5. pts per process)

-Details regarding the specific steps of each process (6 pts)

 

3. Describe restriction enzymes. In your description, answer the following questions:

-What organisms produce them? (1 pt)

-What is their purpose? (2 pts)

-What scientific applications can they be used for and why? (3 pts)

-What is the benefit of utilizing multiple restriction enzymes for scientific applications? (3 pts)

4. a. Imagine you are using Mendelian genetics to study inheritance of a plant species. You want to cross two parental flowers. In the P generation, one parent, who is homozygous dominant, has purple flowers and a long stem. The other parent, who is homozygous recessive, has white flowers and short stems. Using this information, carry out a cross from the P generation through to the F2 generation. Be sure to use Punnett squares appropriately (4 pts). Additionally, include the phenotypic ratio for the F2 generation and provide the details of the ratio (i.e. the color of the flowers and the stem length). (2 pts)

b. Describe one of Mendel’s laws of inheritance that can be illustrated through the cross describe above. Be sure to define the law (1 pt) and how the cross is highlighting this law. (2 pts)

5. In reference to the Sordaria meiosis experiment, answer the following questions:

a. Draw the possible recombinant options (2 pts)

b. What is a map unit? How does this relate to % recombination? Be sure to describe this thoroughly. (2 pts)

c. Imagine you counted the number of recombinants in a sample. There were 142 recombinants out of the 275 ascospores counted. What is the % recombination frequency? What about the map units? Be sure to show your work to justify your answer. (5 pts)
