In this research paper, the goal is to provide evidence that you can gather a body of knowledge on a particular topic, show that you can synthesize the information and make some intelligent, insightful observations about the subject, and prove that you can employ your critical thinking skills to identify a particular FEAR that plagues YOU and offer a possible solution to this problem. What this essay should NOT be is just a regurgitation of information strung together. This paper should focus on an explanation of what this particular problem is and why this problem exists, specifically, as well as whom (what race, ethnicity, culture, or gender) this problem might affect and how, through your research and knowledge about the subject, you will propose an idea (or ideas) that would solve this problem. You can view your FEAR as something that affects not ONLY YOU, but also this world, this country, this college, or your local community. If you feel the need to “set the stage” for your topic or you need to explain why your topic is controversial, do so in the INTRODUCTION of your essay. Your body paragraphs should be used to explain and solve your fear rather than inform the audience with facts. 1. Make sure that you explain your fear without including too many background facts on your topic. 2. Create sentences with the purpose of convincing the reader that it is important that we address and find a solution to your fear. 3. Explain your proposal: how do you intend to SOLVE or CONQUER your fear? 4. Anticipate any arguments AGAINST your solution and refute (answer) them. 5. Make sure to use a variety of evidence: facts, expert opinions, examples from society, and/or information from various genres/mediums. This problem/solution essay should focus on 1) a very specific fear that you feel needs to be addressed and 2) very clear approaches for instituting change. Your plan for change DOES NOT have to guarantee a “complete and total” solution to eliminating your fear. This research paper should be a complete, academic essay of 1,750 words, total (not including direct quotations or Works Cited materials). Your paper should still revolve around a central thesis statement. Your essay should contain 4-5 CREDIBLE, ACADEMIC sources. Blogs, Wikis, op-eds (editorials), Reddit threads, and other questionable sources will NOT be accepted as valid sources. Your paper does not have a chance to be comprehensive unless you have substantive sources. Your sources SHOULD include books, journal articles, professional publications, Internet sources, and possibly other forms of media such as movies or podcasts. Your sources SHOULD NOT include JUST WEBSITES. It is a balancing act to find sources that you can understand – that relate to your topic, and, at the same time, challenge you intellectually. Scholarly sources that reside on the Internet will be only accepted from .gov, .org, or .edu websites. Solution part: How is your fear most often caused? What do you think needs to happen for this fear to be conquered? Explain your proposed solution. Include the steps needed to implement the proposal. What reasons can you give to show that this solution will work? How can you demonstrate the logical connections between your fear and your solution? What specific effects would your proposal have on your fear? Explain the cause to effect relationship. How does this solution differ from previous solutions that have been tried? Your essay should spend VERY LITTLE time/space on the information. If you feel the need to “set the stage” for your topic or you need to explain why your topic is controversial, do so in the INTRODUCTION of your essay. Your body paragraphs should be used to explain and solve your fear rather than inform the audience with facts.
