1. Identify the central themes of the two poems and discuss how the poets reveal these themes through an analysis of the literary elements (such as parts of the poem, sound patterns, figurative language, and poetic devices) and any other aspects (symbolism, historical context, structure, etc.) you feel contribute to the overall meaning you wish to discuss. Draw comparisons and contrasts between the two poems where you are able.
2. Create your own specific topic taking into consideration the primary requirements of option
-Use MLA guidelines
-4 pages (conclude on page 4)
-Double space, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman
-Give your essay a thoughtful title (“Essay 4” or “Poetry Analysis Essay” are both examples of poor titles)
-Provide the necessary background in 3-4 sentences including the title of the poem(s), poets’ names and any relevant biographical facts, and summary of the poem’s subject or topic.
-Write about events in the poem in the present tense and refer to the speaker or persona. Where it is clear the poem is autobiographical you may also refer to the poet.
-Use quotes from the primary texts (the poems) to prove your thesis
-Use quotes from the secondary sources (2) as well
-Incorporate the textual quotes into your sentence; for example; according to…
-Two primary sources: for the poems you may use an online poetry database such as Poetryfoundation.org. Double check MLA standards on citing correctly.
-Two scholarly articles from the Galileo database or UNG/UGA Library. Most poems should have an overview or short scholarly article available through Galileo. The database I have had a lot of success with over the years, is Literary Resource Center (also known as Gale). Do not use or include quotations or sources form sites such as eNotes, Shmoop, LitCharts., SparkNotes, etc.
