Case Analysis #3: Personal Values

Case Overview

Life is a series of decisions. Some of these decisions are major (should I marry, should I have children, should I take a certain job, should I move my family to a new location) while many others are minor (should I stay late at work tonight or have dinner with my family, should I focus on my friend or engage in my own self-care). Some decisions in life are expected and ca be planned for, while others are unexpected. Earlier decisions affect later decisions. Sometimes there is a clear answer if you know your values, but sometimes these decisions are hard and force you to make a trade-off between your core values. Most of the time, we only get one chance to make each of these decisions. We can learn, adapt, and adjust for future decisions, but the choices we made are still final and we often don’t know their impact for many years into the future.

Imagine a world in which we could actually know the effects of our decisions and assess the outcomes prior to making them. We might make very different decisions. While that isn’t possible, this simulation that you will participate in gives you a chance to make a series of decisions about your lives, assess where these decisions lead you, and then reflect on these decisions and the values that guided them. By doing so, you can be better informed about yourself, what matters to you, and the implications of your decisions going forward in your life.

Simulation Process
Results: You will receive your simulation results as soon as you finish the post-play survey. There is an option for you to download your results as a PDF if you choose to and I HIGHLY recommend that you do so to aid in your debrief paper.

After completing the simulation, you should write a 2-3 page (single-spaced) debrief that focuses on the following questions:

Did you live a life well-lived?
Did you decisions in the simulation reflect your values and priorities, whatever those might be? Why or why not?
What was your pattern of decision-making over time? How did the simulation distractions, pressures, and uncertainty affect your process?
What did you learn about yourself? What do you know now from “living” out your choices? What do you need to do to be equipped moving forward?

As you answer the questions above, give specific examples of the metrics from your results report that support your answers. In addition, think back to you “Flexstyle” of work-life balance. Does your “Flexstyle” align with your results?
