As you work on your upcoming research project and reach the end of your formal training in composition, I would like for you to keep a few things in mind. First, this research paper is really a test of your ability to think critically, organize logically, write/edit accurately, and research/document skillfully. As such, you will want to show show off your skills as well as you can. This paper counts 30% of your grade and should be a compilation of all the skills you have gained in English 1101/1102.

One very important college level skill is the ability to find and use resources. If you are not sure how to format or document a particular item such as a parenthetical citation or even an entire works cited page, you are expected at this point to look it up and get it right. In fact, you should look up everything just to verify that you have done it correctly. No student should be creating inaccurate parenthetical citations or an incorrectly formatted works cited page. In general, an MLA formatted in text citation contains the author’s last name and the page number, never the year. (Faulkner 67). Of course, if you use the author’s name in the lead in, the citation will contain only the page number. (Years are used in APA format, but never in MLA). Look up everything to make sure it’s right as accuracy is an important part of your grade on this project. A good resource is the Purdue OWL website/MLA. You can look up answers to any question you may have there regarding documentation and research, including such things as how to create a citation for two authors or more than two. Never assume anything–there is a precise way to document everything! The more accurate your project is, the higher your grade will be.
