.You will be doing more investigation on topics covered in class, by comparing two different places and going into detail on the weather, climate, geology, landforms and ecosystems of these two places. You will be doing a fair amount of comparing.

2.You must use multiple sources for your short research paper, citing them appropriately. using a formal citation style. I don’t care which one you use (MLA, APA, etc.) just pick one and stay consistent. IF YOU NEED ANY HELP WITH THESE PLEASE SEE ME!! Not citing sources is considered plagiarism (in essence “stealing” someone elses intellectual property.

3.You need to compare the physical geographic characteristics of: Two places that are very close to each other, yet may be remarkably different in their PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY in the first 3 paragraphs. I am talking specifically about places that one travel to both in the same day, no more than three hours by car. California is a great place to use examples from with high snowcapped mountains overlooking arid, hot deserts, with inland valleys that get both hotter and cooler compared to foggy, drizzly coasts, or windswept coastal prairie close to redwood groves. These are just some examples. You do not have to limit yourself to California. Many western states also have great contrasts, for example Arizona’s Grand canyon rim with the canyon bottom, the pine forests of Flagstaff close to the red rock country of Sedona. These are all merely examples.

AND Two places that are geographically distant (Specifically on SEPARATE CONTINENTS) but because of latitude and position on continent do have very similar physical environment in the last three. I would HIGHLY recommend reviewing the chapter/power point on climate zones, and watch again the video we watched on Mediterranean climates to get a better idea.

Here is what not to do!:Discussing the differences between the physical environment of Antarctica to the Amazon rainforest or the Sahara desert is not a good comparison as these are “polar opposite” (no pun intended) in terms of physical geography. Also, focus on physical geography addressthe characteristics of your two places that reflect what we covered over the course of the semester. Also, speaking of which, you must consider scale. Antarctica, the Amazon, or the Sahara are simply way too large to compare and contrast, you must compare places that are small enough that can be pinpointed on a map. It is best to use specific cities, countiesor national parks. Some individual countries which are small enough, say no more than 100 miles across in any direction might be ok to compare and contrast, otherwise focus on a single region/state/province, etc. Below is a rubric to give you an idea of how your semester paperwill be graded. Content -40% of your gradeIs your paper 3-5 pages of text? (Please keep in mind to have 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins and double spaced). Again, AT LEAST 3pages, though for most people it will be around 4 pages. Are you paraphrasing information accurately? Are you demonstrating an ability to synthesize stuff you learned in class and apply it? Remember, if you are not sure where to start, it IS ok to check out Wikipedia. But do NOT use it as a source. Instead check out where the Wikipedia article got its sources through the references and external links on bottom. Also remember to take advantage
of libraries and library staff. Libraries are in no way obsolete! Mechanics –20% of your gradeIs your paper relatively free of errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure? I’m not talking misplaced commas;I’m talking errors that are distracting and careless.

If you have NO works cited of any kind, you will receive an automatic zero on your paper, and possible disciplinary actions as this IS considered plagiarism. However, if you AT LEAST have a works cited list of some kind, then you will be inthe clear of this most grave consequence. Are you citing your sources on a separate page, in order, using one of the formal citation methods (MLA, APA, etc.)? (Please refer to various resources online that show you how to do this or come see me, if you are struggling with this part). Do you have AT LEAST three sources? (and I mean at least). Do you have in-text citations, such as footnotes or parenthetical references (preferred) on nearly every paragraph?? Organization –10% of your grade. Is your paper organized? Does it have an introduction, a wrap up/conclusion? Do you discuss places individually, and then discuss how they compare and contrast? Or do you compare and contrast your two places by topic (weather/climate, geology/landforms, ecosystems/biomes)? It is best to use subheadings. Extras/Images–10% of your grade. At the very least you must have a map, showing where the places you are talking about in the paper are located, and at least two pictures or other images of the places you are writing about.
