Euripides and Soyinka
1. for Euripides’ “The Bacchae,” write 150 words on Pentheus’ and Dinoysus’ respective ways of “protecting” the city. What kind of traditions and norms must be respected to make Thebes strong and secure – military power and social order, or piety and respect for the gods?
(you may address who their respective followers/supports in (or outside) the city are, and how orderliness or disorderliness among these followers will lead or not lead to the stability of the city. OR you may address how long-lasting or permanent the stability of the city will be in one or the other of their orders is followed. )
Must use at least 2 quotes from the play (need to write the quote at the beginning and the quotes don’t count as part of the 150 words.)
2. for Euripides’ “The Bacchae” and Soyinka’s “The Bacchae of Eurpides,” find one clear difference in the endings between Euripids’ and Soyinka’s plays, and offer an interpretation for why Soyinka changed Euripides’ ending. Consider the context in which Soyinka wrote the play in which it was produced. (Maximum of 150-200 words.)
Must use 2 quotes from each play (4 quotes in all) provide page numbers for all quotes (the quotes don’t count as part of the 150-200 words.
