Scientific Literacy Project
Part 3 Instructions
Practice…Use the Health News Guidelines to analyze the credibility of one of our RadioLab podcasts (it doesn’t have to be the current one). What were its credibility strengths and weaknesses? Use specifics to support your conclusions. Note that I am not asking whether you liked or disliked the podcast or agreed or disagreed with it – as much as possible, put those thoughts aside and just assess how credible it is. You can completely agree with a topic AND acknowledge its credibility shortcomings. Similarly, you can really disagree with a point of view but give credit where there is good credibility.
Part 4 Instructions
Practice Again…Where do you usually get your news? TV (local, national, Daily Show), radio (NPR, other local station), newspaper, online magazine (Flipboard), Internet source, twitter, facebook, etc.
[Note: If you don’t usually pay attention to the news at all, pick some source you’ve maybe been curious about and try it for a few weeks. If you have no ideas, please ask me. As a busy, working mom, I personally love NPR (National Public Radio FM 90.9) when I’m in the car and the Flipboard App on my smartphone.]
Pay attention to this news source over the next 2-3 weeks for stories related to health issues or updates.
Use the Health News Guidelines checklist to analyze 2 specific stories related to health issues. Pick stories thatrepresent 1) a more credible story and 2) a less credible story. Write a brief summary of each story. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each per the checklist. Again, remember that credibility is different than whether you agree or disagree…
