The inferno Canto 10

Structure: Five paragraphs

1. Introductory paragraph: a general statement that should end with the THESIS STATEMENT clearly stated.

2. Second paragraph: TOPIC SENTENCE clearly stated at the beginning; specific details should follow that explain/support your topic sentence. Closing sentence that tells the reader you have explained/supported your topic sentence.

3. Third paragraph: TOPIC SENTENCE again clearly stated at the beginning; details that, again, explain/support your topic sentence. Closing sentence leading to fourth paragraph.

4. Fourth paragraph: TOPIC SENTENCE, etc. etc. etc.

5. Closing paragraph: Restating thesis statement and showing that, in fact, the point of view (interpretation) stated at the beginning has been fully explained/supported, in other words, proven.

You should make an effort to write sentences that reflect the meaning you want to convey to your audience. If you want to give your reader a clear, essential idea, you might want to write a strong simple sentence. If you want her/him to consider two related idea standing next to each other, you might want to write a compound sentence. If, instead, you want your reader to deal with a more complex situation, you could consider writing a complex sentence, in which an independent clause stands above a dependent/subordinate clause, showing that one is more important than the other. You might also want to keep in mind the possibilities offered by a loose sentence, one that reveals the subject at the very beginning, or a periodic sentence, one that makes the reader wait until the end of the sentence to find out the subject.

You should also keep in mind that transition words, such as although, because, since, etc., connect elements and show relationships. These functional words give your paragraphs coherence and even cohesion precisely because they show how ideas relate to each other.
