Think about the number of arguments you encounter each day. From arguing with yourself about what to wear to an article or professor arguing about climate change, we see various forms of argument all of the time with many purposes: to understand, to explore, to inform, to convince or persuade, to problem solve, and to reach a consensus.

Your final paper: will be 1150-1200 words long and include3-4 outside sources (But no more than 4). The essay should be written in MLA Format and third-person/objective. (no I’s or you’s).

Marijuana is legal in many states; however, with this legality is drug testing and as a result of this test employment could be denied is this a violation of your rights? Are there certain fields where testing is necessary?

What effect does violence in movies and video games have on us in real life? Are we less sympathetic to each other because of the exposure to violence without consequence?

Format: Your essay will need to have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, perfectly formatted and cited in MLA format.

The introductory paragraph (first paragraph) will include your thesis statement.

The body paragraphs should further explain your topic and need to include evidence to support your thesis. This is where you will use research to support your ideas. Use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to persuade your reader (pp. 408).

The conclusion should wrap up your essay. Try to persuade your readers to believe your view of your argument.

Essay content: For this essay, you will choose a debatable or controversial issue and take a stance on this issue.

You will need to make a claim(s) in this essay and support your claim(s) with evidence.

You need to argue the point! Choose a side, and defend your views.

You must explore opposing views of your topic and mention these views in your essay.

Make sure you have a thesis statement that you organize your essay around and provide evidence for.

You will be graded on the strength of your thesis statement, essay focus, paragraph/idea development, ability to follow MLA format and documentation, ability to incorporate research into your essay, the strength of your argument, and sentence-level issues.

 

Required outside resources: minimum of 3— but no more than 4 (more than 4 will result in an ungraded paper). This means your essay will include in-text citation and correctly formatted works cited page.
