Essay Three: The Art of Asking
Purpose: To explore those areas in your life where you have/had a hard time asking for what you need or want; To practice quoting and then citing another writer’s ideas in MLA format;
To continue the practice of organizing and developing ideas in an expository essay.
We all have areas in our lives where we are reluctant to ask for what we need or want. For Amanda Palmer, she struggled with asking her husband for money even though she finds it easy to ask her fans for money. What are areas in your life where you are reluctant to ask for what you need or want? Consider hard asks within a relationship, family, work, or community, those that often trigger a physical reaction such as a rush of anxiety in your body. These will be asks worth exploring in the below essay assignment:
Write an expository essay that identifies, discusses, and analyzes a hard ask for you, whether that ask was in the past or is in the present. Towards the end of your essay, get curious and explore what might make it easier to move ahead with your ask, or if your ask was in the past, reflect on what you came to learn from your experience.

• An introduction that smartly and creatively guides your reader to your thesis;
• A thesis statement at the end of your introductory paragraph that responds to the above prompt;
• Body paragraphs with strong topic sentences and specific detailed support that advance your support in
relation to your thesis;
• TWO or THREE embedded quotes from the reading to be used as a way to further illustrate your thinking
or as a way to frame your experience in relation to Amanda Palmer;
• In-text citations for your direct quotes or for any paraphrased ideas from Palmer;
• Use TWO noun phrase appositives and TWO verbal phrases. Please be sure to underline them.
• A conclusion that does not begin with the words “In conclusion” and that offers your readers something
more than just a restatement of what you already have written;
• A “works cited” page (I WILL SUPPLY THIS FOR YOU);
• A title that effectively and authentically sets the mood or tone for reading your essay. I often find the
perfect title to be some key word or phrase that I have used in my essay.
