Week 6 Discussion

I got involved with Cleveland State’s Campus Activities Board my freshman year of college and my student life advisor was my role model. My sophomore year I fell in love with event coordinating and I knew I wanted to make a career of the two. That is why I am pursing a degree in higher education. In order to best improve the programs I would encourage diversity. Many students look at diversity rates when considering what school they should attend therefore colleges have been working hard to ensure that they are creating a more inclusive diverse culture for students. An institution that implements a priority on diversity creates a statement. It encourages students to find opportunities to interact with diverse individuals (Kramer & Miller, 2010). Assessing this will allow the university to determine how well they are doing in creating a climate that is welcoming of diversity and is inclusive to students.

Student accessibility is the second area that is important to students. “Students with disabilities encounter a developmental process of understanding and accepting their disability and related needs, fostering a sense of identity, and increasing their self-advocacy. Incoming students with disabilities—and their parents—will discover that college is very different from high school” (Student Accessibility Services, 2020). Many students have needs that need to be met and a university ensuring that it has the correct amount of services and aids to help students achieve success is extremely important.

Going along with student accessibility is student success. Students want the best chance to success so going to a college or university that I know will have the services and support that I need to succeed is important. Many schools graduation rates are low so selecting a school that has a higher rate may show me that they care about their students and have services that will help me succeed. “On campuses where faculty have substantial course-related interactions with students, both first-year and senior students reported gains in personal/social development and general education knowledge” (Webber, Krylow, & Zhang, 2013, p. 593).
