Executive Summary

Executive summaries are cornerstone documents to creating larger bodies of work such as research papers. They are also an important communication tool in the workplace between co-workers and decision makers. Developing excellent writing skills will serve as a distinct advantage when writing future papers and ultimately report writing for employers.

An ES is not an abstract, the ES consolidates the main points of a body of work in order to highlight significant findings or points of action. The ES to be submitted will be 200-300 words

(title page is not included in word count) and summarize the assigned article.

· Read the article and identify the author’s main argument, topic sentences and supporting evidence.

· Using Word, draft the executive summary

o Develop an introduction describing the current state of the topic or research described in the article

o Identify the approach (authors position) or methods presented within the journal articles

o Consolidate and summarize the overall findings from the articles

· Edit for spelling, punctuation, sentence, and paragraph errors

· Submissions are formal documents requiring a title page

· Papers should be formatted with 1” margins, 1 ½ line spacing

· Formal documents are written from a neutral position and should present the summarized facts obtained from the journal article. Personal pronouns should not be used; e.g. I, me, my, mine
