In your paper, be sure to address ALL aspects of the following prompt: Choose at least two authors whose readings were assigned in class, and apply their concepts to a significant, contemporary social issue in detail. Which distinctive concepts from your chosen authors are most relevant or illuminating for your issue? How are the concepts defined, and what importance do they have for the theoretical arguments of the authors? How would the authors apply the concepts to the issue in question? What novel perspectives or potential solutions may we gain on the issue from your chosen authors? How do the theories of the authors you chose contrast with one another? As a guideline, the paper should be about 8-12 pages long (this is not a hard-and-fast rule, but an indication of what level of detail is required to complete this assignment.)
As mentioned in the course syllabus, this paper should be a substantial and thoughtful piece of writing, and it should demonstrate a clear grasp of the course themes and goals. Organize your paper so that it makes a coherent argument with a central thesis that relates theory to your chosen social issue. Explain or show how each part of your paper contributes to this central argument, and make sure that there is a logical progression of ideas that the reader can understand. In your paper, give proper citations to the texts from the course, including the relevant page numbers where the topics you discuss may be found.
Requirements For Either Option:
Be sure to properly cite all works (including the course texts) that contribute to the claims you present in your final project. If you make a claim that is beyond the range of common knowledge, that claim should be supported by appropriate professional literature. Use one consistent pattern for citations – the standard in sociology is ASA style (Links to an external site.) or Chicago/Turbanian (Links to an external site.), but you may also use another formal system such as MLA or APA with which you are familiar. Under no circumstances should you present material from a secondary source as your own, make use of another student’s paper, or copy material from the internet.
The papers or artist statement should have one-inch margins, be double spaced in a 12-point font, and pages should be numbered. Indicate on the first page your name and the course number.
