●You must write a paper focusing on a text that is a “comic.” That is, it must have both art and words that work together to tell a story, like all the main texts we have read so far.
●Your comic is one YOU choose. It must be a comic we have not already read in thisclass. The comic must be at least 50 pages long. Pick something that appeals to you,whether it’s the main character, the art, the story, or the topic. It can be fiction ornonfiction. It can be from any country in any language (as long as you can translate it anddo translate it when citing the text in your essay). It can be mainstream or indie. I do notsuggest anything for small children, but even then, I will consider it if you have asufficiently interesting interpretation. Even a compilation of more traditional “comicstrips” (like ​Peanuts​) can work. Some of you already read comics and have somethingyou love; why not pick that?
Outside sources are not required, but they are allowed. You may use up to five outside sources to assist your argument, but no more. Outside sources may include any text we have already used in the class. NOTE: Plagiarism–using someone else’s words or ideas without giving them clear credit–is strictly prohibited. Anyone with even a single plagiarized sentence will receive no credit on this final paper. So if you use outside sources, use them extremely carefully. Your ideas and your thesis and your words must ALWAYS be your own, and the words of others must always be quoted and the ideas of others must always be properly credited.
You will analyze that comic closely to form a bold, insightful interpretation. That interpretation cannot be too literal or obvious; the more interesting it is, the better. Use the guidelines from Essay 3 to help creating a bolder claim. The goal of your essay is to then explain and support that interpretation as persuasively as you can. I strongly suggest that you choose some ​theoretical angle​, like gender or psychology orpolitics or race or morality or some larger notion that isn’t obvious in regards to thiscomic story but which gives you an insightful focus to allow you to find deeper, moremeaningful ideas to present. Also consider bringing in other comics we have read in classto create an inter-textual comparison and contrast to your chosen comic. As always, theartistic concepts from Scott McCloud’s ​Understanding Comics​ remain valuable and insightful.
You must have at least four body paragraphs total, but you can have as many as you wish.
● Work through your favorite topic above. Re-read/ re-skim the texts to look for key scenes, panels, and characters. Assemble your favorite evidence and describe what you see in notes. Apply art details from McCloud (Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art), like color, shape, and so on.
●Analyze what you’ve described. Look at your own description list and brainstorm for creative associations. Add your intuition, impressions, and loose thoughts. Look for parallels between these examples and anything else you know (other books or movies, for example). Let your imagination flow, and make note of your ideas.
●From your analysis, form an interpretation that clearly addresses the topic you’ve chosen. Take your favorite brainstormed ideas and try to pull them together for one main, central, focused claim. Make sure that claim is NOT obvious; it should feel fresh, bold, interesting, or insightful. This forms your tentative thesis.
●With your tentative thesis in mind, figure out a way to present your argument. Come up with a structure of body paragraphs that serves your main thesis claim. You may wish to devote certain body paragraphs to character analysis or scene analysis, for example. You may wish to spend other body paragraphs on your main premises, spending one paragraph per premise.
●Do not summarize your paper; seek out the deeper, larger implications of your thesis and explore them thoughtfully.
●Once the conclusion is drafted, go back and write your intro. Be direct–no hooks. Introduce the main books (book titles are ​italicized​). Name the authors and artists. Summarize each book briefly (three sentences or less each). Introduce your paper topic. Present that thesis interpretation you came up with
.●As you revise, double check the topic sentences of each body paragraph. Are they previewing specifically the claim of that body paragraph?
●If the paper feels thin or short, go back to the texts. Find new examples to add.
●Creativity is rewarded, as long as you can back it up and explain it. Be bold. These are works of fiction. Your goal is to find meaning that the average reader don’t notice or expect.
●Remember what I always grade for: DETAIL; CLARITY; SUPPORT; INSIGHT.
