You work at the head office of Floral Delights, a 132-store chain across Canada. You are responsible for bulk buying of vases, gift baskets and decorative wrapping. Recently, the company has undergone a management change because of a decline in profits.

You need to reorder decorative wrapping paper. Your current supplier is Amalgamated Suppliers in Chicago, U.S. A. You order 5,280 bundles of paper per year at a cost of $55 CAD per bundle for a total cost of $290,400 CAD per year. Because of the growing awareness of climate change and to stimulate profits, you wish to advertise that Floral Delight’s paper is recycled. However, you find that Amalgamated Suppliers does not offer recycled paper.

You research and find a company, Thorbay Paper Mill in Thunderbay, Ontario that does sell recycled paper. It sells decorative paper for $58 CAD per bundle. This would cost Floral Delights $306,240 ($15,804 more) per year. You must also place a 2-year order unlike the 1-year order requirement for Amalgamated Suppliers.

The budget is very tight and to ask for a commitment of a two-year order at extra cost would put your department over-budget and jeopardize the company’s ability to show a profit for this year.
