Instructions:

Here’s an exercise that will help you better appreciate the organizational principles at work in effective writing. In this exercise you will describe an object that has a “line” that is natural to it, like a tree (that grows from top to bottom).

Part 1

Select one of the objects in your descriptive catalog—like a tree—that lends itself to a “linear” organizational pattern
Part 2

Select five of these features that, together, distinguish this object/subject from all others in the same class. Number them in the order in which they fall along the “line” that is natural to that object/subject (ex. top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, left-to-right, etc.)

Part 3
Write a short paragraph describing this object. Your paragraph should be only six sentences long. The first sentence should state what the object is and where it is. Each of the following sentences should describe one of each of the five details from your catalog. Arrange the five descriptive sentences, after the first introductory sentence, in the order as they appear along that “line.”
