Social Media and Self-Image
Social Media and Self-Image: Body dysmorphia is defined as “a mental health disorder in which you can’t stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance — a flaw that appears minor or can’t be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations” (Mayo Clinic). Many people have accused social media of setting an impossibly high standard of beauty, and for being especially manipulative of adolescent girls in this area. Can their claims be substantiated? Is this really a problem? If so, again, what can be done about it?
In this paper, I will be looking for:
a clear, specific thesis that focuses the paper and tells your reader exactly what you’ll be arguing. Remember that this is an argument, not a “pro/con” explanation of the “positives and negatives” of an issue.
anticipation of your opposition (and, mostly likely, a rebuttal)
clear, logical organization
a solid understanding of the various readings
a thorough discussion of the important ideas in the paper
precise, accurate quotes from sources with proper credit (author and page number, using the MLA system) given to sources. This will include a Works Cited page
clear, concise, grammatically correct writing
