Organizational Analysis and Proposal
You will make a presentation, with one 2-page written “executive summary” proposal. I know, that’s short! The majority of this analysis will be presented orally in a 13 minute presentation.
Part 1: The Organizational Profile
Choose a job. It could be the dream job, or it could be the one you used for Assignment 2. You will imagine a work space for that job, including the organizational structure (e.g., is there a President and Vice President; are there just managers and supervisors). In addition to this organizational structure that you must describe, there is a “Board of Directors” for the organization that helps to make administrative decisions. That “Board” is made up of the rest of your classmates and myself. Give your organization a name, a purpose, organizational structure (as above), number of employees, and describe anything else that will make this organization unique (e.g., a logo). Be creative!
In your presentation, spend several minutes explaining this to us. You can use your previous O*Net assignment or job analysis to help you with some of these things.
Part 2: The Problem
You will also outline a problem that the organization is having. You must describe the culture of your organization. You can make it ANY problem from those listed below (i.e., from the Organizational side of the class):
negative workplace culture and/or cultural issues in the workplace
negative group behavior/unproductive teams/conflict in the organization
You will define the problem clearly, with examples of what’s going on in the organization and with employees. You could link the problem to motivation, satisfaction, and commitment of employees. In your presentation, spend several minutes explaining this to us. We want to fully understand what is going on with the organization.
Part 3: The Proposed Organizational Analysis Process (and anticipated solution)
Now is the tricky part. You are a consultant team, and you have some expertise in issues of this nature. You’re going to be offering a proposal for how you would conduct an organizational analysis to come up with a solution for this problem. You will use your textbook and at least 3 additional sources to come up with an analysis process. This isn’t a real organizational analysis as you can’t actually collect data. You’re just going to outline what you WOULD do and speculate about a solution that is based on textbook/research evidence.
In a real analysis, you would:
Plan what you would do to identify priority areas that need improvement, organization-wide
Pin-point places for biggest improvement and identify constraints (money, time, people)
Design the improvement technique
Outline who needs to be involved (e.g., all employees, leadership only), what will you do (e.g., observe/interview/other), and for what purpose? Remember that often it is an organization’s leadership team that hires consultants with one idea of what is going on, but that you sometimes hear something different from employees. You should address a clear implementation plan that includes the “who, what, where, when, why, how” and links your hypothesized solution to research/evidence. You will spend the rest of your presentation time explaining this proposed analysis. You will submit your slides PLUS the two-page executive summary to me. I know two pages is very short, but writing proposals in a succinct way is a great skill.
