Final Paper: Review of Published Studies
For this project, you must choose two journal articles (published studies) on a topic of relevance to your field of professional practice or interest. Both studies must involve the collection or analysis of empirical data (review essays, historical studies, or theoretical articles are not appropriate for this assignment). In addition, the articles (studies) must examine a potential causal relationship, in the sense of a program, policy, or other independent variable influencing an outcome of interest (dependent variable). As a general guide — for each study — your critique should
State the background and objectives of the study.
Describe the research design, data and methods used in the study
Summarize the findings.
Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study as you see them.
You are expected to demonstrate your knowledge of the concepts from the course by applying them in your critique.
For example, in step 2 above, be sure to identify the study as a randomized experiment, natural experiment, quasi-experiment, or observational study — and explain why you think so. In step 4 above, be sure to discuss both the generalizability (external validity) of the study and the strength of its causal evidence (internal validity).
Be sure to describe the study in your own words; do not simply copy or paraphrase the text of the articles. The extent to which you demonstrate your own understanding and ability to judge/critique the studies, in your own words, matters most.
Your assignment should be 8-10 pages in total, double-spaced, and you must be sure to also submit PDF copies of your two articles.
Use Rutgers-connected Google Scholar (Links to an external site.) to search for a study on your topic of interest (the full-text version of which you can then get through the Rutgers Library using the ‘Get It @ R’ link).
Alternatively, use other Rutgers Library online electronic indexes and databases at https://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/indexes/subjects/indexes_social_sciences (Links to an external site.)
Once you’ve found one study you like, use can sometimes use the references for that study to locate a second, related study of interest.
