Interview a person who is in a small minority in a group to which you both belong. For example, this could be a co-worker at your mostly American worksite, or the only man working in your office, or a trans person who belongs to your mostly cis-gendered church. It could be a Caucasian who marries into your all-Black family. Be sure that the minority group to which the person belongs is 20% or less of the total group. For example, if a workplace has six women and four men, do not choose a man as a “minority” just because there are slightly more women.
On the other hand, one of two Jews working with eight Christians would be acceptable. The group should be people who come into regular contact with each other. For example, being in a racial minority working at a specific McDonalds’s restaurant is acceptable, but not calculating that person’s minority status as compared to all McDonald’s employees worldwide.
The interview must be done specifically FOR this assignment; please do not write about a past conversation with someone. Remember that this is not about YOUR experience; you are interviewing someone else who is a member of a group to which you both belong about THEIR experience of being a minority in that group. The paper should summarize the responses into a coherent story, not just be a verbatim account, although short quotations are acceptable.
The paper should include the following:
Whom did you interview? (First name only)
To what group do you both belong?
Approximately how many people are in the group?
How is he or she a minority?
What is the majority culture of the group? (For example, if your interviewee is a Jew, what is the religion of most of the others?)
When (date and time)?
How did you interview him/her? (email, telephone, video chat, other?)
Interview Questions
Did you know you’d be in the minority before you met the others? If so, what thoughts and feelings did you have about being a minority before meeting the other members of this group?
If you didn’t know ahead of time, what was it like to walk in and realize you were in the minority?
When you first met this group, was it obvious that you were a minority? If not, did you let others know, or just try to blend in? Why or why not?
If your minority status was obvious, what was it like to be unable to hide it?
How did the majority treat you?
What thoughts and feelings did you have while first getting to know those in the majority?
If there was another person also in your minority, what was your connection like with them?
After the interview, ask yourself the following and include your answer in your paper:
How did this interview change my understanding of what it is like to be in the minority? How specifically might that change my behavior?
