Disability Case Study Overview
Students will develop a paper related to a specific disability. Students will provide an overview of the specified disability as well as outline how the specified disability impacts families, and what cultural differences must be addressed; describes the complex needs of individuals with this disorder/disability, presents a range of special education and community-based supports and services that are needed to maximize their achievement and capacity, and discusses the impact of the disability on normal growth and development and the ability to learn, interact socially and live as fulfilled and contributing members of the community.
Population: Your paper must focus on the ages and populations of students that would be served by teachers holding special education: adapted curriculum endorsements. For example, choosing research on students with mild disabilities does not meet the population requirements of this paper.
Extend: The paper must contribute technical detail that extends the information presented in the text or module materials. Be careful to include technical information and numeric data.
Sources: You must supplement basic information from our texts with at least five additional references from the research literature. Only material that has been published in scholarly books or professional journals no earlier than 2013 may be cited (no magazines or web pages).
You may use research articles from any journal that appears in a full-text journal database. Make sure that you utilize research that meets the evidence-based practice requirements specified below.
Original writing: You must paraphrase; do not use direct quotes. The source for paraphrased material must be cited in the body of the paper using APA parenthetical citation. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism.
The paper must be double-spaced, typed in a 12 point Times New Roman font with 1” margins all around with your name at the upper left or right.
References must be cited in the body of your paper, as well as included in a reference page at the end of your paper. Intext citations and the reference page must be in APA (6th ed.) style.
Your paper must have a title and page numbers (no abstract, title page, or running head is necessary).

In this paper, students will provide the following information using the headings and subheadings suggested in bold text below. Please note that additional detail may be necessary to earn exceeds expectations scoring for each component.
Disability Overview and Etiology. Provide an overview of the specified disability and specifically address:
Definitions and characteristics of the disability Including typical and atypical development in cognitive, physical, and sensory functioning.
Issues related to the identification of individuals with the specified disability, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Etiologies and medical complications and implications of conditions related to specified disability.
Impact the disability and related conditions can have on a student’s life.
Impact on Families.
Discuss the impact that the specified disability may have on families as well as family involvement in the education process. Specifically, address:
Impact of the specified disability on the family system (dynamics).
Role of the family in supporting learner development.
Cultural values of the family that may impact involvement in the educational process.
Discuss how differences between family culture and the teacher’s culture might impact the teacher’s interaction with the family and learner.
Educational Issues. Discuss the educational issues related to a specified disability including the range of special education services and accommodations needed to maximize the individual’s achievement and capacity.
Range of special education services possible for learners with the specified disability,
including a continuum of placement options.

Related services needed for learners with the specified disability.
How the characteristics of the specified disability can impact student learning. What accommodations and strategies can be utilized to support learner needs?

Legal Issues. Discuss legal issues related to the specified disability. Specifically, address:
Current legal issues related to learners with the specified disability
Impact on their educational and human rights.
Family Resources. Discuss resources available to families and learners with the specified disability. Specifically, address:
Identify a minimum of three services, networks, and organizations that can provide information and/or services for learners and/or families with the specified disability.
Discuss the roles of at least three professional groups and referral agencies in identifying, assessing, and providing services to learners with the specified disability.
Professional Resources: Discuss resources available to professionals who work with learners with the specified disability. Specifically, address:
Identify a minimum of three organizations that can provide information and/or support services for professionals who work with learners with the specified disability.
Identify a minimum of three publications that inform professionals who work with learners with the specified disability of current research-validated practices.
