The assignment will be one document with three sections: creative, critical, and Works Cited. It’s 2 pages for the creative portion, and 3 pages for the critical portion, PLUS Works Cited page for the critical portion.
This paper has two elements: a short creative story, and a critical portion which is your explanation of your writing process.
The creative portion:
Please write a myth. This really is an exercise in how to incorporate our own culture’s values in a focused way into your piece. Note: not our current situation (i.e., more pandemic stories) but our VALUES. What does our modern world value, and how could you show that in a myth? And what HERO would live the story to show us our value? Would it be a woman? An elderly person? A supernatural being? A child? Hm…what story should this myth carry to future cultures, to send them a message about lessons we know? Incorporate VOGLER’s text: read his character archetypes and his story stages, and use as many of each of those as you can fit in.
Remember our Hero’s Journey myths, our Origin myths, and our End Times myths, all of which contain elements that might be useful here. Depending, perhaps on whether you think our culture is in a hero’s journey time, an end time, or an origin time…?
The critical portion:
In this analytic section, please explain the choices you made in writing your myth. Rather than simply stating what choices you’ve made, pull in our texts and additional research (see note below) in order to ILLUSTRATE why you’ve made these choices. Show an opinion about our culture, and what stories do for us. Reflect also on aspects of myth, historical viewpoints of myth, and any other subject whiten our readings or videos that piqued your interest. In other words, let your own myth writing be a window into your thoughts on myths at large.
Here Moyer’s interviews of Campbell and their conversations about myths in our imagination are going to be helpful. Look also at the chapters in Bierlein’s text, Part Three. This includes “Chapter 13: Parallel Myths and Ways of Interpreting Them” and “Chapter 12: Views of Myth and Meaning.”
Additional for this assignment, please include additional research from a reputable online source, as another view of myth, or way to bolster your point about our current values, or scholarship about literature and culture…you choose a relevant topic to research, and cite it in your paper. This is a way of broadening the conversation you are having. Cite this in MLA style within the paper and on a brief Works Cited page. This Works Cited page should also include your class text as sources. Please see OWL Purdue for MLA format for “electronic sources.”
Remember that this course is about critical thinking, and as such, I’ll be keeping a close eye on the kind of outside research that you decide is worthy of being included in a critical thinking paper about your chosen topic within myth.
