Diversity Narrative

One of the most important ideas in sociology is that of the sociological imagination. If you’ve taken SOC 210, you likely have heard of this idea before. C. Wright Mills believed that sociologists needed to think creatively and critically about their society and their place in their society. He thought that: (1) organizations shape our lives and (2) individual problems may be social problems. Particularly, he thought that there was a connection between our biographies and history.
You’ve had several weeks to review the framework essay and other readings for Unit 1. This journal should relate to these materials.
You have three choices for this response journal. Select one and focus on it for your first journal. I hope you’ll pick something that you’ll have fun learning and writing about.
Choice 1: Alternatively, you might pick a person that has been in the news within the past few years. Discuss how historical and current events helped to shape the person’s life and/or death. (For example, a person might select Breonna Taylor to discuss. How does the way our society shapes master status and inequality shape her life and tragic death? The individual you pick can related to any master status.)
Choice 2: Select a modern fictional character that interests you. This character might be from a book, movie, tv show, video game, etc. Discuss how the person’s life is shaped by their society.
Please, see the attached rubric before you start writing.
All students, no matter which type of journal you chose, must discuss the sociological imagination and at least two course terms from the framework essay in depth. You’ll need to define the term, explain it, and relate it to the narrative you are discussing.
Use MLA style, with 2 to 3 double spaced pages plus a works cited
Do use in-text citations for the book and a works cited page. If you use news articles or other sources, make sure to include them. Make sure to include quotation marks.
