Chapter 5 and 9

Gender Identity, discussed in chapter 5, has become a widely publicized topic in recent
years. The term gender differs from the term sex in that sex is based on biology – we’re
either male or female at birth by virtue of our anatomy – while gender describes the
socially constructed behaviors of being male or female. Another term, gender identity,
refers to one’s subjective sense of being male or female.
You’ll look at the genetic and hormonal determiners of sex and differences in the way
male and female brains operate. You’ll briefly look at some atypical patterns in sex
differentiation, and go into depth on how gender identities are formed. You’ll also look
at variant gender identities meaning that the gender with which one identifies differs
from ones biological sex. The term applied to people with variant gender identities is
transsexualism. You will also read about androgyny and complete a questionnaire that
measures androgyny. Androgyny means that someone is able to demonstrate both
male and female characteristic behaviors. Gender identity is a spectrum. It’s not binary.
The term sexual orientation, which is discussed in chapter 9, refers to sexual attraction.
Terms related to sexual attraction are homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality, and
asexuality. You will also look at theories that seek to explain the causes of sexual
Views of homosexuality have changed over the past few decades; homosexuality has
become more accepted, but denigration of homosexuals is still widespread. The late
20th century saw the beginnings of what has become the Gay Rights Movement that
asks for equal rights for homosexuals. In reading Chapter 9 and watching the additional
film clips and visiting the links, I think you’ll begin to see that homosexual relationships
are not any different than heterosexual relationships. Lastly you’ll get an understanding
of the pain and shame some people experience in “coming out” and accepting their
sexual orientation. Self-acceptance of one’s sexuality, regardless of orientation, is one
of the most important parts of leading a happy, healthy life.

Are you comfortable with the results you received? Why or why not? What do the terms “masculine” and “feminine” really mean? Is it good to be androgynous? In your opinion should we as a society work toward eliminating the so-called “gender differences.”
2. Define gender variance. What are the consequences of being gender variant in today’s society?
1. Do you feel that the increased visibility of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people in the media has assisted in changing society’s attitudes towards sexual orientation? If so, in what way(s)? If not, why not?
2. Define the following terms: sexual orientation, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual, LGBTQ, queer, sexual fluidity, mostly straight, and mostly gay/lesbian.
