This assignment requires students to select, read, and summarize an article from the International Journal of Communication or Social Media + Society. Academic journals (also referred to as “periodicals”) are important venues where professors share research. This assignment serves three purposes: (i) exposes students to the breadth of communication research, (ii) trains students to read academic research, (iii) gives students an opportunity to get feedback on their writing early in the semester.
Step 1: Read ATTACHED ARTICLE
Write a 750-1000-word summary.
Step 2: Write up your summary
In 750-1000 words (double-spaced document, use Times New Roman 12-point font and 1” margins), offer a summary of the article. Consider:
What is the subject or topic of the author’s research? Why is this topic worth studying?
How does the author relate their work to other studies?
What does the author analyze, and how is it analyzed?
What are the author’s most important conclusions?
Do not use the above questions as rigid subheadings. Make your summary flow!
At the end of your summary, under a “References” heading, cite your article in APA style.
Do NOT cite anything from the abstract–cite directly from the article itself.
Include a title page with your name, your student number, the course number, and your GA’s name.

The assignment will be graded out of 15 and is worth 35% of your final grade. A detailed grading rubric is attached.
