you will write one essay in response to a reading. You have three readings per unit to choose from; that is, nine readings total, from which you only have to choose three to read and write about. Here is my recommended format for each essay: Introductory Paragraph: Briefly introduce the focus of your essay and why this subject matters to you. Substantive Section 1 – 1-2 Paragraphs: Using our course materials, broadly explain the subject you’ve chosen as though your reader is not familiar with sociology or this particular social problem. Substantive Section 2 – 1-2 Paragraphs: Hone in on the more specific dimension(s) of this social problem that your selected reading addresses. Summarize the reading’s takeaways, and describe how the author’s research supports (or contradicts!) what our course content says on the subject. Please include at least one in-text citation referring to your reading in this section. Conclusion – 1-2 Paragraphs: Briefly re-state your topic and review the points you made in Substantive Sections 1 and 2. Feel free to also elaborate on why your subject is important to you and/or to society. Essays will be graded for organization and clarity; spelling, grammar, and correct citation style; and completion of the substantive expectations outlined in the recommended format above – that is, even if you veer from the template, your paper should still address the basics of the format: a topic from one of our modules, an outside reading that relates to that topic, and the fusion of the two. Each essay should be a minimum of 1.5 pages and a maximum of 2 pages in length doublespaced, and should include a Works Cited page (even though there may only be one entry on it) which does not count towards the paper’s page length. Please use ASA citation style and Times New Roman 12-point font
