Choose one your short writes to develop into a literacy narrative.

What is a literacy narrative?

“Narratives are stories, and we read them and tell them for many different purposes… Writers of literacy narratives traditionally explore their experiences with reading and writing” but the definition can be broadened to include “experiences with various literacies” such as learning a new skill set, a “language” of the workplace, a code of expectations, etc.

Your literacy narrative will be based on one of the short writes you have already written. It should include the Key Features of Literacy Narratives outlined on p. 87.

* A well-told story– usually one in which some sort of situation/challenge/conflict needs to be resolved

* Vivid detail– which give the reader mental sensations (of sights, sounds , textures, smells, and tastes) and often dialogue

* An indication of the narrative’s significance– the reason the literacy journey mattered to the reader

Technical Details: Format: MLA (588);Length: 750-1000 words (3-4 pages double spaced)

Requirements: The essay should include all of the Key Features of Literacy Narratives(87) and:

Include a title which includes the subject of the essay
Provide a stated or implied thesis statement
Show readers what makes this literacy experience memorable and special
Include clearly organized paragraphs centered around one main idea
Offer specific details based on your experience as evidence to support your bigger ideas
Wrap up with a conclusion that does more than re-present the introduction; it should also leave the reader with an enriched understanding of the subject
Use MLA style page numbers and first page heading (p. 588)
Use language that is appropriate to college-level writing. The essay should employ complete sentences, as grammatically sound as possible. It should not include contractions or slang (unless that is relevant to the text) nor second-person (you) pronouns. Use third-person pronouns (though in some cases, first might be appropriate) and middle to middle-high writing style (nothing too conversational nor haughty).
