Oedipus Reaction paper

Instructions for the Oedipus Reaction Paper:

Overview: To finish up our examination of Oedipus and the way in which Sophocles uses the story to explore ideas of the psyche, you will write an analytical essay in which you state a claim about the character and his presentation throughout the play, and draw from that evidence an idea about what Sophocles wishes us to think. That is, you will argue how Sophocles’ presentation of his character offers insight into his view of a particular character trait or its implications.

Instructions:

Review the two plays we’ve read, and identify a character trait or quality in Oedipus that you’d like to examine. What stands out in his personality for you?
Examine the ways in which the plays present that character trait over the course of the events. Does it change, either in nature or in how it affects his interaction with others?
Make a claim about the question: What is Oedipus defining character trait, and what does his progression through the play have to tell us about that quality?
o It’s not enough to tell me that Oedipus has a particular character trait—you need to examine what happens to him around that trait, and what those events tell us about that quality.
Write a 1250-word essay in which you present your claim and argue for it on the basis of evidence drawn from the text.
o That means analyzing text, not describing what happens in the plays, as we discussed this week.
