Public Health Nursing & Public Health Interventions

Please complete the following case study for RN 405. Please use APA format and cite and reference all material.

Mattias, Trevia, and Laura all work in a large metropolitan city when a life-threatening infectious disease begins to break out in three different pockets around the city. Mattias is sent to the homes of the individuals first identified as having the disease. He interviews family members and friends and counsels those who need to be screened. While visiting each household, he asks about places the first patient went and who he or she came in contact with, and how. Then he retraces that patient’s step and contacts other individuals who may have been exposed. Finally, as time progresses, he and his fellow nurses divide up the cases that ultimately result in an infection to continually follow up with each individual, offering counseling and referrals as needed.

“The work is challenging,” Mattias says, “and oh yeah, it’s emotionally draining at times, but you know, ultimately, it’s really pretty rewarding.”

As work gets well underway, public health nurses doing the same initial work as Mattias then turn in their results to Trevia, who works to set up a team to follow those whose names have been gathered and determines the best community outreach individuals—such as local clergy, schools, community centers, and trusted medical personnel who live in or directly serve that community—to work together to organize these high-risk communities to accept a new (and for now, free) vaccine that seems to be effectively stopping the spread of this disease. These community leaders are supported by public health nurses who help with education and outreach.

“Sometimes the local politics can drive me crazy,” Trevia says, “especially when they see their community is at risk if they don’t work together. But at the same time, I see that these well-meaning leaders are being met with suspicious community members, but you know what? The effort is worth it.”

She arms her leaders with statistics to help them be.

Finally, Laura is a PHN educator who has quit teaching to run for state office.

“Now that the new vaccine is showing a high degree of efficacy in quelling what looked to be a highly dangerous epidemic,” Laura says, “I have decided to run on a campaign platform that includes legally requiring this vaccination for at-risk individuals. I think this is crucial, especially for those who are frequently exposed to others through some sort of public service or public arena such as schools.”

Answer the following questions:

1.) Referring to the intervention wheel, which public health interventions is Mattias performing? At what level(s) is he largely operating? What evidence supports this?

2.) Referring to the Intervention Wheel, which public health interventions is Trevia performing? At what level(s) is she largely operating? What evidence supports this?

3.) As a public health nurse and a former professor, Laura believes that she can speak effectively to the issue of strengthening vaccination laws in her political campaign. Although it’s true that the issue is conveniently topical at the moment, she is nevertheless sincere in her belief in vaccine efficacy and importance based on her own research of the evidence. She begins to meet with various community groups that want vaccines—or that have more questions about the vaccine, and she finds the choice to work for this to be a mission she values and is eager to take on. Despite the political undertones, which level of public health intervention is Laura embarking on? Which intervention tools is she using?
